I don’t know if I've shared my love for reading on the blog. Well here it goes. I love to curl up with a good book, bookstores/amazon get me excited, and my favorite part of any vacation is the opportunity to read for hours. I’m a fan of a traditional book with pages, but I don’t discriminate. I love a good audio book and once in a while I power up the Kindle. Every legend I know dedicates time to reading despite their hectic schedules. Reading, if just for a moment, provides an escape during which you can learn, grow, dream, or enter someone else’s world.
I picked my last read, Settle for More by Megyn Kelly, out of curiosity and it turned out to be a pretty good read (it does not hurt that Megyn Kelly is a proud Syracuse Alum, Go Orange!). Megyn Kelly, who decided to leave her career as a flourishing lawyer, is now one the most watched TV news anchors in America. In the book Kelly passionately discusses how she lives her life by settling for more and encourages her readers to do the same. I have some serious critiques, but I appreciated Kelly’s overall message.
There is usually a negative connotation associated with settling. You know, we usually don’t get excited when we hear someone say “I’m just going to settle for this job, career, relationship, or position.” Settling typically means accepting less than what you dream for, want, or deserve. We settle because somewhere deep down inside we believe that our dreams, wants, and desires are unattainable. We settle when we do not use our imagination, gifts, talents, or passions. When we settle we become comfortable, undermine our potential, and stifle our growth.
Settling for more is the opposite, and it gets me excited! Settling for more is believing that our goals are obtainable, and not stopping until we reach them. Beyond that, settling for more means that we recognize that we are capable of more than we even imagine. Settling for more is about pushing past our dreams.
If we are being completely honest, we have all settled at some point in our journey towards becoming legendary, but legends like Megyn Kelly settle for more! In the next few days take some time to reflect on the following questions (it wouldn’t hurt to jot down your answers):
