Every time I get on a plane I do the same thing. Adjust my neck pillow, pop some gum, turn up my music, wrap myself up in my oversized travel sweater, and prepare for the ultimate nap. My goal is to be knocked out before takeoff. On my last flight as I engaged in my pre-takeoff ritual I was interrupted by the voice of the energetic pilot. It was the way he introduced himself that engaged me. He explained his “liberal seatbelt policy” (his words not mine!), and thanked us for supporting his five children by purchasing a ticket with the airline. I was amazed by this pilot’s ability to engage a plane full of sleepy passengers. In that moment I was reminded of the power of engagement.
Let’s be honest, we are consumed by our daily responsibilities, electronics, the news, and whatever else is going on around us. As a result, we have stifled our ability to engage with the world. In order for us to be at our best we must intentionally connect with the people, things, and spaces around us. We must do so in a way that is meaningful. Therefore, in 2016 we DARE you to join us in being intentional about engaging. Here are some ways to get started.
Engage with the people around you. Put down your phone, take off your head phones, look around, say hello, start random conversations, invite your co-worker to lunch, smile! There are billions of people on this planet for a reason, we are supposed to connect with each other. Don’t let the joy of connecting with the people around you pass you by. Some of life’s greatest moments happen in the company of other people.
Engage with your community. We all need to be a part of at least one strong community. There are numerous opportunities to engage in the places we work, worship, workout, and live. Join a committee, ministry, or group fitness class. Whatever you choose, form new relationships and make a difference by engaging with your community.
Engage with your space. When was the last time you enjoyed the outdoors, your favorite coffee shop, the view on your way to work, or the peace of a quiet room? Something special happens when we are connected to our space, so be mindful about connecting with the spaces you frequent.
Engage with new things. This one is simple, try new things! You might just fall in love.
We would love you hear how you plan on engaging in 2016, leave a comment or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Remember we are also Dreaming, Accelerating, and Reaching in 2016. Check out those past blog posts if you missed them!
